  1245. MMDS - Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service.  Two sets of four
  1246.        channels each.  Also, type of service known as "Wireless Cable".
  1247. MDS  - Multipoint Distribution Service.  Two channels that are similar to
  1248.        MMDS.  May be used in a wireless cable system.
  1249. ITFS - Instructional Television Fixed Service.  Channels that must have a
  1250.        minimum of 5 hours per week of educational programming.  May be
  1251.        leased for wireless cable usage.
  1252. OFS  - Private Operational-Fixed Microwave Service.  Three channels that
  1253.        may be used for a wireless cable system.

  1255. Q.  WHAT IS WIRELESS CABLE?
  1256. A.  Wireless cable is a name given to a service that is called Multichannel
  1257.     Multipoint Distribution Service (or MMDS).  It is a new type of cable
  1258.     television system that offers its subscribers a mix of broadcast and
  1259.     satellite cable channels.  Wireless cable uses Super High Frequency
  1260.     ("SHF") channels to transmit satellite cable programming over-the-air
  1261.     instead of through overhead or underground wires.
  1262.  
  1263. Q.  HOW DOES IT WORK?
  1264. A.  Scrambled satellite cable programming is received at a central location
  1265.     where it is processed and fed into special transmitters.  The SHF
  1266.     transmitters distribute the programming throughout the coverage area,
  1267.     usually over a 25-mile radius.  The signals are received by special
  1268.     antennas installed on subscribers' roofs, combined with the existing VHF
  1269.     and UHF channels, and distributed within the home or building through
  1270.     coaxial cable into a channel program selector located near the
  1271.     television set...just like traditional cable television.

  1273. Q.  WHAT ARE SUPER HIGH FREQUENCIES?
  1274. A.  Years ago, there was only one television broadcast band authorized by
  1275.     the FCC called VHF or Very High Frequency.  The UHF (Ultra High
  1276.     Frequency) band was authorized in the 1950's and recently the FCC
  1277.     authorized commercial usage for up to 33 television channels in the SHF
  1278.     or Super High Frequency band.  Individual SHF frequencies are known as
  1279.     MDS, MMDS, ITFS and OFS.  Wireless cable uses as many of these
  1280.     frequencies as are available in a market to bring subscribers the best
  1281.     in cable television programming, including blockbuster movies, sports,
  1282.     music videos, news and information services.

  1297. Q.  IS WIRELESS CABLE'S CHANNEL CAPACITY COMPARABLE TO TRADITIONAL CABLE?
  1298. A.  Yes!  The average channel capacity of U.S. cable systems is just over 30
  1299.     channels.  When fully implemented, wireless cable operations may have as
  1300. +++ many as 33 channels of broadcast and cable programming.  Over 100
  1301. +++ channels could be available if digital bandwidth compression is used.
  1302.     This, of course, depends on which channels are already used in your
  1303.     area.  Furthermore, 20 of the channels are borrowed from ITFS services
  1304.     and are earmarked for educational use.  This means there is a
  1305.     requirement to program 5 hours per week per channel of educational
  1306.     material.

  1308. Q.  WHAT EQUIPMENT IS IN THE SUBSCRIBER'S HOME?
  1309. A.  Each household subscribing to the service has a small antenna on its
  1310.     roof (about the size of an open newspaper) and a downconverter inside.
  1311.     The downconverter usually includes an addressable decoder and a VHF/UHF
  1312.     tuner built in.  This gives it the ability to tune in broadcast channels
  1313.     without having to use up valuable MMDS channels.  It also allows
  1314.     pay-per-view services and simplifies channel blocking and premium
  1315.     channel activation/deactivation.

  1317. Q.  WHAT CHANNELS CAN BE SENT?
  1318. A.  Wireless cable systems can carry any of the typical cable channels.  In
  1319.     the past, some channels refused to let wireless cable systems carry
  1320.     their signals.  However, the cable re-regulation bill (S.12) made
  1321.     channels that are available to cable companies also available to
  1322.     wireless cable.  It can also send the 'SuperGuide' data along with
  1323.     similar data services.
